Generation NEXT

Leadership Lab Pilot Project

What is GenNEXT?

GenNext Leadership Lab will support equity-deserving members to build their leadership skills, grow their confidence, and develop the relationships and tools needed to step into leadership roles within their schools, locals, and at the Federation level.

GenNEXT is designed to strengthen our union by creating space for new voices and perspectives. If you have been looking for a way to upskill your leadership abilities, get involved with your union, and connect with like-minded folks, keep reading!

What you'll explore

  • Leadership is Grounded in Community and Identity.
  • Successful Navigation of the Federation Requires Literacy in its Structures, Supports, and Governance.
  • Leadership Grows through Applied Practice, Observation, and Engagement in Authentic Decision-Making Spaces.
  • Effective Leadership is Grounded in Equity Principles and Strengthened through Mentorship and Coaching.

Is GenNEXT for you?

01

Are you part of an equity-deserving group?

e.g., racialized, differently abled, neurodiverse, rural, etc.

02

Are you new to union work?

i.e., zero experience in a formal role.

03

Do you see yourself as a leader, but you don't know where to start or what skills you need?

If you have answered yes to these questions, then GenNEXT is for you!

Before you apply

Things to consider before submitting your application:

  • The program will run for one year. Can you commit?
  • Participants will meet once a month (in person or online). Will you be present?
  • The goal is for participants to apply their skills. Will you step up?

The fine print

GenNEXT will run from February 2027 to May 2028

  • Sessions will be held monthly, and exact dates will be provided to accepted candidates. Full attendance is expected.
  • Travel will be expected for in-person meetings. All costs associated with attendance, including LOAs, will be covered by the BCTF.
  • The pilot project will be composed of up to 12 members.
  • GenNEXT is not open to members who are currently on leave.
  • Selections will be made by members of the BCTF Executive Committee with intersecting identities.
  • Vacancies that become available during the program will not be filled, as the program content is linear and cumulative.
